York's CURIE Policy Made Public
David Noble
For years York University has kept its liability insurance policy confidential, preventing faculty, staff, and students from knowing that they are covered. Thanks to the interventions of the Financial Services Commission of Ontario and the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario the policy has now been made public.
Under the Canadian Universities Reciprocal Insurance Exchange (CURIE) policy faculty, staff, and students are covered as "additional insureds" (paragraph 6.1). As such they may file claims directly with CURIE. (paragraph 8.4). They are required to give York prior notification of any claim but do not need York's approval. Under a severability clause (paragraph 8.15) additional insureds may file claims against other additional insureds, as well as against York. The policy provides defense against most liability claims, including libel.
Address claims to Stewart Roberts at the CURIE Burlington Office (see policy for address). Send prior notification to Steve Pottle at pottles@yorku.ca.
